JIM W. BALSTER
As Vice President of UPS Professional Services, Jim manages the development of all engineering disciplines for practice areas supporting supply chain management, fleet services and logistics technology worldwide.
A thirty-two year veteran of United Parcel Service, Jim has managed the planning and construction of over 100 UPS facilities in the U.S. and overseas. During UPS’s rapid international expansion, he oversaw the opening of offices and distribution facilities worldwide, and was responsible for establishing and staffing engineering departments. During his career, Jim has also had corporate responsibility for the development and administration of technical training material and workshops for UPS engineers, and led the development and implementation of standardized architectural and construction contracts. He has taught project scheduling and construction management courses for UPS’s engineering and maintenance departments. Jim served as the corporate maintenance manager, establishing maintenance practices for material handling systems.
Jim also played a significant role in UPS’s commitment to public education by serving as a loaned executive to the Atlanta Public Schools system for more than a year. During his assignment, Jim was responsible for planning and implementing construction and maintenance improvements and the development of standard practices.
Prior to joining UPS, Jim worked in the construction industry as a scheduler, estimator, and general contractor, building hotels and restaurants.
Jim studied mathematics and engineering at the University of South Dakota and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He serves as the Executive Director of the National Museum of Patriotism and is past Chairman of the Fulton Education Foundation. He is an examiner for the Georgia Oglethorpe Award, a state award for organizational excellence based on Malcolm Baldrige criteria. Jim, his wife Kathleen, and their five children live in Alpharetta, Georgia. He enjoys tennis, golf, and soccer and sings in his church choir as well as community theater.
